Specialist Dietitian in Bariatric Surgery, Gut Health & Oncology

Practical, evidence-based nutrition support from an experienced Clinical Lead Dietitian.

Specialist advice. Practical food

Sam Thearson is an HCPC-registered dietitian with extensive experience across specialist and general dietetics.

He currently works as Clinical Lead Dietitian for Bariatric Surgery at Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust, with particular expertise in bariatric surgery, gastrointestinal nutrition, oncology and prehabilitation.

Sam is FODMAP trained and also supports people with a wide range of nutritional, metabolic and medical conditions.

Before training as a dietitian, Sam worked professionally in catering and cooking. This means his advice considers not only the evidence, but how food is actually bought, prepared and eaten.

His approach is straightforward: understand the problem, look at the evidence, and develop a realistic plan that works in everyday life.

How I can help
Specialist and general dietetic support, online throughout the UK and face-to-face in Kent.

Bariatric Surgery
Specialist nutritional support before and after weight-loss surgery, including surgery undertaken overseas.

IBS & Gut Health
FODMAP-trained support for IBS, bloating, altered bowel habits and other gastrointestinal conditions.

Oncology & Prehabilitation
Nutritional support before, during and after cancer treatment or major surgery.

General Dietetics
Individual support for a wide range of nutritional, metabolic and medical conditions.

Bariatric Surgery

Specialist dietetic support before and after bariatric surgery, including gastric sleeve, gastric bypass and other procedures. Support can include preparation for surgery, post-operative dietary progression, protein intake, vitamin and mineral supplementation, food tolerance, nutritional blood monitoring and longer-term follow-up. Support is also available after surgery undertaken overseas.

Gut health

FODMAP-trained support for IBS and other gastrointestinal symptoms, including bloating, diarrhoea, constipation, abdominal discomfort and food-related symptoms. Advice is individualised and may include first-line IBS management, targeted dietary changes or a structured low-FODMAP approach with reintroduction, while avoiding unnecessary long-term restriction.

Oncology and Prehabilitation

Nutritional support before, during and after cancer treatment or major surgery. This may include help with poor appetite, unintentional weight loss, muscle loss, treatment-related eating difficulties and maintaining protein and energy intake. Prehabilitation support can also help improve nutritional status before treatment or surgery.

Weight management and metabolic health

Practical, evidence-based support for weight management and metabolic conditions including Type 2 diabetes, insulin resistance, reactive hypoglycaemia, high cholesterol, high triglycerides and familial hypercholesterolaemia. Advice focuses on sustainable dietary changes rather than rigid or unnecessarily restrictive plans.

Poor intake and muscle loss

Support for people experiencing unintentional weight loss, poor appetite, malnutrition or loss of muscle mass. Advice may include increasing energy and protein intake, food fortification, nutritional supplements where appropriate, and strategies to support recovery following illness, surgery or cancer treatment.

General dietetics

Individual dietetic assessment and advice for a wide range of medical and nutritional concerns, including coeliac disease, pancreatic and liver conditions, PCOS, respiratory and cardiovascular disease, neurological conditions, recovery after surgery and general healthy eating. If your condition is not listed, please get in touch to discuss whether I can help.
